Should I Change My Radiator Cap?
Our answer is yes!
A very high percentage of vehicles you see broke down on the road are cooling system related. Some of these problems could have been prevented by replacing your radiator cap. On the average a radiator cap cost $7.00 to $12.00 to replace.
What is the purpose of the radiator cap?
It does more than keep the coolant inside the radiator. It reduces the boiling point of the coolant inside the radiator. Water has a boiling point of 212 degrees. Newer engines have an operating temperature of much higher than 212 degrees; therefore the radiator cap must do its job by pressurizing the system to increase the boiling point of the coolant. Every radiator cap has pressure range, determined by the manufacturer. If your vehicle overheats, the radiator cap will release some of the pressure so it will not damage your radiator or engine components.
Radiator caps are pretty simple. A spring controls the pressure and a rubber seal keeps the coolant inside of the radiator. In a nut shell, springs wear out and seals get hard and crack. Its cheap insurance to replace you radiator cap.
It is highly recommended to replace radiator cap when you perform a scheduled cooling system flush.
